I can't recall ever having seen him play but he is locked in my boyhood memory box. He "guested" for Blackpool during the war years and was a very good friend of Stanley Matthews who also "guested", I seem to recall that he was best man at SMs wedding? Still going strong at 91, good on you Sir.

Many will remember Derek Tapscott who was an all-action inside forward for Arsenal, and later, Cardiff City, in the 1950s. Derek's obituary appeared in yesterday's Guardian. He died on 12th June, aged 75. It is a sign that age is creeping up when a person's prime seems such a short time ago and now he has passed on.

Does anyone now remember Albert Quixall of Sheffield Wednesday, Man Utd and Oldham.
There was a time when he was going to be the next big thing being capped by England at 19 and being the best ball juggler in English soccer. His career sort of unexpectedly faded out and he never made it as big as his early promise.
Another one like that who was a fantastic junior and then disappeared was David Cliss of Chelsea - was he a Spurs junior? As a schoolboy everyone was raving about him....

I've just heard the news of Reg Flewin's death. Reg was the locally born skipper of Portsmouth Football Club when they won the League Championship two years running in 1948-9 and 1949-50.

By all accounts he saw the Cup Final earlier this month and was delighted that Pompey had won. He lived here on the Isle of Wight and was reportedly 87 years old.

Jimmy Langley one of the most popular of players has passed away from a heart attack. Fulham and QPR fans will be especially saddened. He was the most whole hearted of players and always gave the Maestro Matthews a good contest. With George Cohen, Fulham had an international pair of full backs. Have just read the obituary of Norman Deeley in today's Guardian. He died on 7th September so the news is a bit late in getting out.

Many will remember Norman as a diminutive winger who played for the great Wolverhampton Wanderers football team in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was capped by England on two occasions.

He was a very tenacious player and made up for his lack of size by a willingness to tackle everyone and anyone. His natural skill was supplemented by the effort...

When I was a kid growing up during the fifties one of the Sporting Heros to make the transition of sports star to celebrity was that of Boxer Freddie Mills. In fact, I even remember him making a cameo appearance in a Carry on film. I was even jealous of a cousin of mine who actually had a Freddie Mills Punch bag and Boxing gloves!
So I was going to post a piece here about good old Freddie and his early and mysterious demise, when I came across this piece. Dont know how many of you remember...

Al Oerter passed away yesterday, Al one of the all time great track and field athletes won four consecutive Olympic discus titles from 1956 to 1968. Quite amazing really for a man who suffered with heart problems from an early age.

I've just heard over the radio in a Newsagent's shop that the great Hampshire and England opening bowler, Derek Shackleton, has died aged 83.

Derek was very much a 1950s player although he had come down from Yorkshire just as WWII was starting and joined Hampshire as a young colt.

The 1950s saw him at his brilliant best. Never really fast, Shackleton bowled at a steady fast medium pace trundle but his skill with the ball was unmatched by most. He was the master of 'reverse...

Derek Dougan has died suddenly at the age of 69. He came to England from Northern Ireland in 1959 to join Portsmouth and also played for Peterborough, Aston Villa and Leicester but it is with Wolves that his name will be linked, both as a player and, eventually, as chief executive.
