Do you remember the small ads which used to appear in the small print at the back of magazines and newspapers advertising the Cornish "piskie", Joan
The Wad, an ugly little creature in the form of a small metal good luck charm. Said to bring the buyer good fortune and wealth but nevertheless depriving you
of one shilling should you wish to swallow the guff ? The ad used to be a more or less permanent fixture in the fifties and sixties.

I was talking to a friend today and I mentioned that there is still someone in our street has one. The conversation then turned to the old hearths and side
overns etc. But do you recall how in the 50s all night fire became the thing to have. You replaced the old hearth with a fancy front. This stooped the fire
from going out over night. It may have just gotten down to a couple of burning embers that you could add coal to and it saved having to set a new fire.

"Before ASBOs, neighbourhood watch and paranoia over paedophiles, children could play outside with impunity. Over 100 years ago, folklorists counted
nearly 1,000 different games being played on the nation's streets, playgrounds and fields, from leapfrog to street football. This wonderful two-part
documentary series explores the rich heritage of children's play in Britain...

Good to see the "Other 50s Discussion " section open for business again after nearly seven weeks!
Can I ask if anyone remembers when some of the larger shops had an extraordinary payment system which involved the sales assistant placing your money in a

your change back to to the sales assistant. Sounds quite primative now,...
