I had this film on my DVD recorder until a few weeks ago before deleting it so I have just missed checking out the poster that you mention Camaygirl. I have watched it several times in the recent past and it ought to be the sort of film I like - right period, great cast including Trevor Howard, Griffith Jones, Sally Gray, Rene Ray etc., but I just cannot enjoy it. It reminds me of a British attempt at an American film-noir and to a large extent, succeeds being dark, brutal and threatening. So very un-British for the period. I'm not surprised it gave you nightmares!

Camaygirl - I have managed to catch this film again and spotted the poster you mentioned. No doubt it was part of a 1940s road safety campaign and would have been familiar to the audiences of the day. I agree it is a bit spooky with the large facial portrait, veil and staring eyes. I think the two words underneath 'Keep Death of the Road' could be' carelessness kills' but it's difficult to see on the tv screen. Interesting to speculate why the props department saw fit to hang it on the wall. Was it a joke, given the action takes place in an undertakers or a reminder to the gang of the consequences of getting sloppy? Perhaps the woman was meant to symbolise a grieving wife or mother or (and this is where my brain starts to hurt) she is a metaphor for death itself. I must lie down now.
