Yes, Beyond Our Ken has been rather overshadowed in radio history by Round the
Horne, but -- excellent as that latter series was -- BOK (which I probably heard far more episodes of) was
very good too, and with pretty much the same cast.
In particular, I recall - Any-Questions-style panellist Arthur ("I think the answer loys in the soil") Fallowfield (Kenneth Williams) - roving reporter Cecil Snaith (Hugh Paddick) - pop singer Ricky Livid (Paddick again) and last but by no means least - cookery expert Fanny Haddock (Betty Marsden): "Johnny and I have discovered a wonderful new use for pineapple rings".

Beyond Our Ken was a great, great programme. In later years, I could only hear it on the World Service and, unfortunately, the reception was far from perfect.
So hearing it again on BBC 7 is always great.

BOK ran for seven series, 121 episodes, from 1958-1964 and was written by Barry Took and Eric Merriman. When Eric Merriman moved on to television scriptwriting
Barry Took teamed up with Marty Feldman and changed the name to "Round the Horne," with a different format and new characters. RTH ran for four
series, 65 episodes, until 1968. A fifth series was commissioned but Kenneth Horne's death in February 1969 brought everything to a sad end. Various Old
Time Radio sites have all available episodes of both programmes on MP3 CD format.

Wasn't the 'pop star' called Ricky Livid?

This is becoming rather bizarre. Am I the only one who can see Focalists posting?

In my opinion the wittiest and funniest programme ever to run on any broadcasting channel anywhere.
There were times when I was literally convulsed on the floor with laughter (and I dont do that often!) We will not hear its like again. |

It was more than bizarre, Jimbo - it was inexplicable - nay pathetic. My own memories of that wonderful series were echoing around my head as I made the post. I hope it doesn't signify the onset of something unpleasant! |
