Slick, slightly Americanised manner as opposed to most British stand up. stage comedians of the time. For some unknown reason I never took to him. I never found him particularly funny either but he used to go down well with audiences and for a while compered Sunday Night At The London Palladium.
Slick patter, quite light on his feet, danced a little and sang a little too. What I particularly remember about his act was that he would nearly always finish with a Frank Sinatra number - "One For My Baby".
This involved the lights going down and Dickie propping up some cocktail bar. He would casually sling a fedora he was wearing on to the bar and leaning against it would start to warble - "It's Quarter To Three, There's No One In The Place Except You and Me". Eventually ending by taking back his hat, knocking back a small glass of something, and donning it again at a jaunty angle. Then he would amble off stage to his punchline "Make It One For My Baby And One More For The Road".
This was Dickie's tour de force. For some reason this part of his act has always stuck clearly in my mind.
Here's a not very good pic of him on the left of Arthur Askey and can you identify the lady in the middle without looking it up?
