Came across an interesting book in a charity shop today, 50 Years Of Hancocks Half Hour by Richard Webber. It's about the episodes rather than the man
himself. It gives details of the radio shows and with the TV shows it gives the casting. I have only dipped into it for now and what I have read it's very
good.

Strewth, what a family! My family were tame in comparison. |

I finally read the Hancock book and it was very good. It was just about the shows themselves, not about Hancocks life. There were two scripts form the shows
that were never recorded. I am now onto Esther Williams' autobiographywhich is interesting.

Finally finished the full Harry Potter series. Now I must wait until November for the next film "Half Blood Prince" to come out!! Guess I'll have
to queue up with all the kids! Currently reading Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood's autobiography. Quite interesting in the early days but, ironically, became
somewhat tedious when he officially became a Stone! An endless list of 'my great friends' Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, Margaret Trudeau, Jimmy White,
Frankie Dettori etc etc ad nauseum, accompanied by how many lines of coke he got through, how many times he got blasted through drink and drugs. Not much
similarity to Cliff Richard's life story!!!

I'm about a quarter way through a book which might be the definitive book about the Black Dahlia case. The book is called 'The Black Dahlia Files'
and the author is Donald H. Wolfe who is a native of the Los Angeles region of America where the murder took place in January 1947.
The book is well written and a massive amount of research has obviously been done. There are excellent photographs of the victim and of all the other principle characters in the case. I haven't got anywhere near the conclusion yet but it is obvious that there were massive cover-ups in the police department and much of the information now available only came to light 50 years after the murder. I know there are other posters on these boards who share my interest in criminology and it is with those colleagues in mind that I mention this book. The case was very intriguing at the time but it seems to have been much more involved than was first suspected. |

I read the Esther Williams Biog. It was very good but can any lady on this board explain to me why many of the female film stars seem to be so stupid. With
Maureen O'Hara she would just let anyone walk over her and treat her like dirt. She would never stand up for herself. With Esther Williams she married a
man who became a drunk and let him waste her money until she was in debt to the IRS. She then married Fernando Lamas who was a complete control freak and
dictated everything she did. Worse than that, he wouldn't have her kids in the house and she remained married to him for over 20 years. Doris Day was
another star who never seemed to pick the right man.

"J Edgar Hoover - the man and his secrets" by Curt Gentry, a disturbing account of the life and times of the man who was the power behind the
presidential throne of the USA for nigh on 50 years. He had secret files on just about anyone and everyone, and used them whenever he wished, or leaked
selected contents to his chosen friends in the media. No person in any form of high office, presidential candidate, or even president was safe - when Roosevelt
died and was succeeded by Harry Trueman, Hoover immediately sent for his 250 files on the new President! Anyone who dared to cross him was doomed by him and
his FBI, and he was the guiding hand behind Senator McCarthy and the infamous hearings which wrecked many a life or career. Many of his most secret files were
shredded by his secretary of fifty years within hours of his death. How much of his legacy lingers on is hard to say, but it is a frightening account of a
country which claims to be the "land of the free," and many of whose events affected matters that we on this board all lived through in our early
years.
