Gas prices to rise |
Lead | |

Didnt they rise back in the spring?

For the first time in apparently 5 months ours have gone down twice this week which is apparently in keeping with the fact that oil prices by the barrel have
dropped and we are now reaping the benefits. Or at least that's what the media is saying.

The reports today state that Gas is set to rise by 70%! And, yes! You are right, Stephen, it was only a couple of months ago that it went up!

The "high" phone bill would only be a one off though wouldn't it Stephen. Good job you don't cook or spend your days at home because then
you'd have something to complain about!

Gas Prices To Rise | ||
|
And they're coming home to roost via BELGIUM and here's why your prices are going up. It's yet another Euro carve up and you mugs are going to fund
it. Dont forget to vote "No" if you ever get the chance.
Centrica is to increase its stake in Belgium's second largest power generation company SPE to a controlling 51% at a cost of over €½bn. The UK firm, which already owns 25.5% of the business, chose to exercise its pre-emption right over the other 25.5% held by Gaz de France following the purchase of the French utility's 50% stake in the 50/50 joint venture, Segebel SA. It expects the deal, worth €515m in cash, to complete in September. A deferred consideration of up to €105m will be due based on the final terms and timing of approval of the 'Pax Electrica 2' agreements under which SPE will buy extra power offtake from Belgian nuclear power plants. GdF was obliged to sell its interest in SPE as part of the anti-trust remedies imposed by the European Commission in order to get its merger with Suez approved. "Our 51% stake in SPE increases the opportunities for Centrica in Europe and the Pax Electrica 2 agreements further enhance the value of this stake by making SPE increasingly competitive in the Belgian marketplace," said chief executive Sam Laidlaw. |

William, I don't see what this has to do with the EU at all.
Centrica is a multinational company, only nominally British-based: a behomoth created out of the mid-1980s sell-off of British Gas, which you might recall, to a hoard of greedy-but-dim amateur minority shareholders embodied in the promotional campaign of the day by a bloke called Sid (which should have given some idea of the sort of the 'give us your money but don't ask awkward questions at the AGM' investors they were looking to attract). The company, which now has its fingers in pies all across Europe and North America, has been a principal beneficiary of the world Trade Organisation's 'GATS' agreement, which paved the way for for a pan-global carve-up of utilities among private companies. The resultant contracts are IRREVERSIBLE, and there is absolutely nothing any national government, or even a federation of nations, can do about them. So you can vote 'No' until you wear your pencil-wielding fingers down to blackened stubs. It won't make one iota of difference to the multinational conglomerates' stranglehold on your gas supply.

For many years I have been able to buy my gas from the Electricity Company and my electricity from the Gas Company. Lord knows who owns the local Water
Company. As Steve eloquently puts it absolutely nothing to do with the EU however much anti-EU obsessives might wish it. And of course all these organisations
were originally taken out of national ownership by a UK political party in the 80s.

Gas Prices | ||

I am well aware of the former British Gas set up and your references to "Sid", Steve, but unlike you and the Brigadier, I disagree about European
involvement. New European trading rules allowed stakes in hitherto national companies which previously would have been untouchable to become pawns in the
portfolio of foreign mega corporations. As if that wasn't bad enough, British Energy which controls much of our nuclear industry, (John Birt's infamous
blue sky vision of the future) is now being flogged off to the French.
Be afraid. Be very afraid! |

I am with you Wiliam on this matter. We are now in a position that if the Arabs or the French or Russians want to destroy us by turning off our energy then
they can. I find it very worrying how we are giving up the rights to so many things and it has nothing to do with the EU.
Look at what Gadaffi has done to Switzerland because his son was reported to have illtreated his servants. He has told his oil industry not to sell oil to the Swiss. |

Gas and Electric Bills | ||
|
Stephen, If you had a bill for £150-00 it was probably based on an ESTIMATE. This is sent to you automatically if the meter isn't read. Maybe you were out
when the meter reader called. Look at the latest meter reading and if it is an estimate you will see the letter "E" in brackets just after the meter
reading figure.
Check your meter, take the correct reading and phone it through or send it by letter. If you do it promptly you will get an amended gas (or electric) bill sent to you. This will then lead to you getting notified of the correct amount which no doubt will be a lot lower. NB. If you DO NOTHING then you are liable in law for the higher amount they say is due even if its incorrect. |
