Operation 'Chastise. | |||
In the action, eight aircraft were shot down or crashed en-route with the tragic loss of 53 men who were hand picked and trained by Wing Commander Guy Gibson specifically for this mission. In terms of success, it was hailed as a supreme act of flying skill, of valour, and great propaganda for the country but at a great loss of life. Gibson received the Victoria Cross and thirty three other members of his Squadron received decorations. They are forever known as 'The Dambusters'. our last UK flying Lancaster will as usual, be flying over Derwent Water as a memorial to those gallant airmen. |

Great news.....The RAF are to be sponsoring Vulcan XH558 after its successful flying display at the Farnborough Airshow.
Corporate sponsorship is essential to the running costs of £50,000 per month, and after its airshow success a number of other sponsors are showing interest. We all knew that once in the air, the Vulcan would be able to attract potential sponsorship and long may it continue. |

Bomber Command In an extraordinary snub to the many thousands of men who courageously helped save us from Nazi aggression, the Prime Minister said due to long standing conventions he could do nothing to honour their service during WW2. Mr Brown insisted he admired the 'dedication and bravery', but Government rules meant it was too late to award them a campaign medal. It is said that the Queen would be happy to approve such a medal but had not been consulted. I note that the same rules were torn up by Tony Blair five years ago when he awarded medals to veterans of the Suez conflict, so there has been a precedent, so why not for these boys. The Sunday Express Honour the Bomber Boys crusade has been inundated with letters from veterans and relatives of the 55,000 men from Bomber Command who gave their lives in WW2. Canadian, Australian and New Zealand governments were all now considering awards for their own nationals who served in Bomber Command - if they do it so should we. Lets forget petty rules and regulations, let these young men who went out night after night knowing they had a 50% chance of not coming back, get the recognition they deserve before the last ones pass on. Do you agree? |
