Puts me in mind of similar events that used to occur in Blackpool at Stanley Park in the 40/50s when stars of the Summer Season Shows attended. Wonderful!

I am sure if we dig around on the ITN/Pathe site that this event may well have found its way on to film, Judy. Most of these celebrity shindigs did and this sounds quite a notable one. May not have a time machine, Judy, but when I have time I will look for the next best thing. A recording of the event.

Others are there though. However, this bit of film has turned up a real historical gem for the William Brown MCP fashion museum. First known sighting of spotted stockings. This is the earliest date I have ever encountered for these alluring garments. If any Turnip knows of an earlier incarnation, please contact this site. This could even be an exciting "First ever!" Worn very fetchingly in the bit of film by one Diane Hart. A lady unknown previously to me but who now has an immediate honorary doctorate in my MCP Centre of Excellence . Checked her out. Claim to fame on television - "The Ted Ray Show" - 1955. Her last film as an actress was apparently as a Mrs. Hill in "Games That Lovers Play" aka in America as "Lady Chatterly Versus Fanny Hill" (yes, honestly!) This only goes to show, girls, what a downward slide you embark on should you be wicked enough to don the dreaded legwear of temptation early in your career. Be warned! PS. Check out the amazing hat designed as "The Skylon" worn by another naughty exhibitionist. A one off, surely? Here is the technical written blurb regarding it which lists the stars seen in the clip. I mentioned that I would have come in your time machine if only to see Sandra Dorne (I was a big fan when a lot younger). I also said I had never heard of Diane Hart. Whilst looking up Diane Hart to see what she had been in, I saw that her most notable part was in a film with David Niven and Vera Ellen called "Happy Go Lovely". Who should be in it with them all but Sandra Dorne! The year the film was made was 1951. the same year as the Garden Party. I think its highly likely now that the two of them may have met on the set of this film and attended the Garden party together. I will look at the newsreel film again in view of this to see if I can spot Sandra. But the weirdy coincidence doesn't stop there. For some time I have been researching someone (now deceased) who I had no idea was involved on the production side of this film. Can't give the name, sorry as it's an ongoing project. I found this person had a significant input into this film and it's been very valuable to my further research. Quite amazing.

As you suggested, I paid a visit to the Pathe News site and spent a delightful couple of hours dipping into the various items relating to the Film Garden Party. I didn't catch Sandra but I found some very good footage of a heart-throb of mine - Griffith Jones. Lo and behold, went downstairs to watch "Trial And Retribution" and up pops his daughter Gemma.

I don’t know about Sunday Pictorial Garden Party, it seems more like Heavens Garden Party to me. Imagine being able to mingle and chat with those ladies and take portraits of them with a modern camera. Sadly only two of them still with us. Gary Marsh was like the uncle one wishes one had had as a child. I always enjoy his films.

I went to one in about 1950 or 1951 when I was either 13 or 14. A boy at school and I were great film buffs and we sent off for tickets. I bought an autograph album signed by such luminaries As Kenneth More, Patric Doonan (he later committed suicide) Googie Withers and John McCallum and others. I still have it. I wonder if it's worth anything.

Bela appeared at the Sunday Pictorial Film Garden Party at Moreden Hall Park on June 16th, 1951, along with other American stars Burt Lancaster and Bette Davis. I've seen the Pathe newsreel, but I'd like to find any newspaper reports of the event or see a copy of the programme, ticket or any photos. Could anyone suggest where I could possibly find them?
