What a great channel this is for raiders of the lost films.
"Calling Paul Temple" (1948). John Bentley starred with Dinah Sheridan - A francis Durbridge adaptation of his radio serial "Paul Temple and The Canterbury Case".
And apart from the ubiquitous late forties hairstyles on the ladies there was a wonderful crap cabaret number mid stream with a first even for my collection - a death mid song. Definitely a first. Female singer descends staircase in a nightclub, sings a song and collapses halfway through , (poisoned) and tumbles down the staircase, dead.
the song was "What's Cooking In Cabaret" or somesuch. "What's cooking ?" probably being the trendy phrase de jour in 1948 and the song kept up the unsullied crap reputation of these numbers.
But the production values for this film were better than usual. William noted a selection of leggy lovelies lining the staircase - an unnecessary production expense but welcome all the same. But the standout trivia gem in this one was that the girl who was singing and fell down the staircase went on to become one of the world's richest women and the doyenne of American socialite society. And I can't say that about many of the crap singers I've heard and seen in this spot over the years.
And another trivia gem . I didn't know that Dinah Sheridan's son was once Chairman of the Conservative party.
Amazing what a bit of digging turns up.
