Having just discovered that the music used in the new National Lottery advert is an original piece and very nice too, it's actually the B side of Patience and Prudence's 1956 record "Tonight You Belong To Me". I began to think of the good value you got with records in those days. In fact some other "B" sides became actual favourites over the "A" side in our house. My personal favourites were:- Cincinnati Fireball - Johnny Burnette (Dreamin') Princess, Princess - Johnny Tillotson (Poetry in Motion) Please Love Me Forever - Tommy Edwards(It's All In The Game) Alone at Eight- Avons (Seven Little Girls) Devoted To You - Everlys (Bird Dog) and many, many more.

I should get out more.

'Only love can break a heart/If I didn't have a dime' by the late Gene Pitney was a a great double sider.

What an absolutely lovely ballad sung so warmly and tendely by Mr Presley. The same chap also wrote many other Elvis songs including the delightful 'I met her today' and co-wrote 'Please help me I'm falling.' He also had his own top 20 hit in Britain with 'The Happy Whistler', Don Robertson.

I also think Connie Francis' 'Carolina Moon/Stupid Cupid' falls into that category. We didn't have many records when we first had our record player so the 'B' sides were played nearly as much as the 'A' side.

His first recording was a cover of the Bobby Helms US hit "Schoolboy Crush" and "Move It" was simply the 'filler' on the other side. When the record was sent out to DJ's for airplay some of them turned it over, preferred "Move It" and played that instead!

Lost John / Stewball Bring A Little Water Sylvie / Dead Or Alive Gamblin' Man / Putting On The Style etc 10 years on and the same thing happened with several Beatles singles. Of the No.1 b-sides that didn't become hits in their own right - 'You Were Only Fooling' by Connie Francis was a favourite of mine (other side to 'Who's Sorry Now') Sometimes A & B sides got separated in the charts, and each scored in their own right. Ruby Murray's 'Happy Days And Lonely Nights' & 'Let Me Go Lover' spring to mind. Brian

It must now be a nightmare for the chart analysts like our Vicky to sort out. Here's a couple more memorable A & B sides Johnnie Ray: Cry / Little White Cloud That Cried Doris Day: Secret Love / The Deadwood Stage Sometimes in the 1950s original American couplings were split onto separate discs in the UK. Two like that which immediately come to mind were: Guy Mitchell: My Heart Cries For You / The Roving Kind Rosemary Clooney: Hey There / This Ole House While in reverse .... The Platters 'Only You' and 'The Great Pretender' were on separate discs in the USA, but put back to back for the UK release. Brian

Anything thats part of you was a great song and could have been an a side.Many more of elvis' chart hits had equally good b sides too.It Hurts Me,was far better than Kissin' Cousins, and was relagated to B side status to promote the Kissin' Cousin movie.That's when Your Heartaches begin, was also a cracker on the flip side of All Shook Up.One of my all time favourite B sides if not my favourite was Never Ending, on the reverse of Such A Night. Elvis had some beutiful ballads tucked away on the other side.
