Congratulations to Ossie on an excellent compilation album which came my way today. It features a singer I had given up hope of ever seeing on Cd. So, well done Ossie. In my delight to obtain the album I've forgotten to mention the singer and title of the album. Mike Preston "Mr Blue" Decca singles compilation 1958-64 and it's on Vocalion. I love "A House, A Car And A Wedding Ring", "Marry Me" and of course "Mr Blue". In his very comprehensive liner notes Ossie neglected to mention the current where abouts of Mr Preston. Is Mike still with us?

mike has been living and performing in Australia for years
but i have not heard of him in recent times, i too love that C,D he realy has a great voice for ballads like mr Blue, but i must say the song off it that has garnered the most repeat plays from me is "dirty old town" the song had to wait a few years though to be a hit in another version. Mikes version is realy beautiful. i'm hoping someone wil do a c.d of all his Australian hits and recordings like christmas alphabet. john,.m |

Thanks for the info John. I didn't realise that Mike had carved out a successful career in Australia. Many people regard Luke Kelly's version of "Dirty Old town" as the definitive one.

Mike Preston performing 'Dirty Old Town' is one of the tracks featured on one of the only two Oh Boy! shows which are available.

I must echo Aimen's congratulations to Ossie.
I'm just giving this CD another airing. I agree about Mike's ability as a balladeer and I also like the more upbeat tracks especially 'Punish Her'. |

While reading this thread I was sure that I had seen Mike in a film at the cinema during the 60's and I was right, he appeared in a film set in the
Phillipines called 'The Subraya Conspiracy.' Mention of 'Dirty Old Town' reminded me that it was actually a Joe Meek production.

Mike and I appeared with Anita Harris on her much heralded variety debut at the Newcastle Empire in the early 1960s. I guess she must have been 16/17 and a
"No Go" zone was put in place whereby we (the male species) must keep our distance and not attempt to approach her. Mike and I weren't too
concerned however as generally speaking the geordie lasses surpassed the imported lasses. Mike was a great artiste and great company to be around. Maybe if he
had been allowed to get a little closer to Anita she wouldn't have the problems she has now.

I was reading about her problems only last week and was completely shocked at the way things have turned out for her. She always struck me as being a really
nice person as well as being talented. One can only hope she gets a break somewhere along the line.
