'Lashings' would be particularly delighted. It is a pity he doesn't appear to be around any more.

That looks a grand site Mr. T. Very colourful, which, I would guess, characterised The Crazy Gang even though they perfromed in an era which was, to some extent, grey.
Slapstick was never my forte but the one sketch of theirs I remember, no doubt from television, was the 'man-eating fish' sketch. One was led into believing a Leviathan of the seas would appear but all that turned up was a drab looking individual eating cod and chips from a newspaper. Very obvious - but very humourous. |

Excellent addition to the Board, Mr. T.
There are many reasons why the Crazy Gang hold a special place in my affections. I still recall vividly that "Last Night of the Crazy Gang" on TV from the Victoria Palace. There wasn't a dry eye in the house (or mine) when Flanagan and Allen sang "Strollin" for the last time. My father's favourite songs were "Marta" by Arthur Tracy and "Any Umberellas" by Flanagan and Alan. And one of my all time favourites is "Underneath the Arches" by the same duo. It was way before my time, but I still remember being captivated by the unique harmonies of this pair, neither of whom could sing well, but whose pairing was just magical. A prime example of the whole equalling more than the sum of the parts. Not only that but long ago I posted that this pair plus George Formby and Vera Lynn made an incalculable contribution to the wartime morale of the British people and the troops. They really did help us win the war. Bud Flanagan had an individual charisma that was beyond pinning down. He just had something you can't bottle, as anyone who saw him live will confirm. All the other members of the gang were very talented in their own way too, (dancers, jugglers, musicians, etc.) which you have stated in your new piece. Not of today's tastes maybe, but of their time, truly legendary. A great new addition, Mr. Turnip. Well done! |

Good work, Terry. I'm pleased to see the 'Gang' honoured with a website created with that special turnip touch.
Do you need any additional material? The following relates to their farewell performance at Victoria Palace on 19 May 1962, which was televised by ATV the following evening, Sunday 20 May 1962. ![]() ![]() ![]() I think my scan of the Bud Flanagan article is not clear enough to use, but if you think it's interesting enough to add to your website, Terry, I'll get a better copy to you - or send you the actual TV Times (send me an e-mail if you need it). Hi Brian,
That's superb! I don't have much content on the TV page of the website yet and your pictures will help enormously. If you could produce a hi-res scan of the article and e-mail it to me, That would be great. Thanks. T. |

I saw all the post war shows at The Victoria Palace. For the last show I booked two seats in the second row of the stalls on the Thursday night prior to the last night. My wife was scared stiff that The Gang would 'pick' on her. Why her? Apart from the fact that she was the most beautiful woman there that night, or any other night, she had a fear of comedians I think. Anyway nothing happened to us. I remember Teddy Knox asking the others if they were going to 'The Labour' on Monday. And being so close to the stage I could see the darns in the showgirls' tights, so much for the glamour of Show Biz!!

Thanks to my dad, I got introduced to the great gang as a youngster, as he used to sing me their old songs. In fact he and I made a recording of 'Any Umbrellas' when we're on holiday a very long time ago - they used to have these boxes (like phone boxes) - you stepped into and made the record. I wish I still had it!!

I'd love to see their old films, but since I'm in Canada, I can only hope they get released here.
