Most hereon will remember the Garth strip cartoon in the Daily Mirror way back. I recall as a kid seeing this strip and was startled by the appearance in one story line of a bevy of giant spiders. I hadn't read the lead-up strips to the appearance of these gargantuan arachnids but they seemed to inhabit caves and, on the occasion I saw the strip, they had somehow captured Garth's girl friend, the delectable Dawn, and had her thrust up in their web.

What happened after this I know not as my perusing of it was somewhat one-off. However, the story line and the pictures stayed in my mind over many years.

Much later, when researching something somewhat more academic, I decided to fill in the time while waiting for my material to be brought to me from the Bodleian vaults, I decided to consult bygone Daily Mirrors in an attemt to determine exactly when this story appeared. I had estimated that it would have been about 1950. As it turned out it appeared as long ago as 1947 which was something of a chronological awakening for me!

It would comfort me if someone else remembered Garth's tussles with the giant spiders!
