Does anyone remember this series of bodice-ripping French novels, the first being published in 1957.

They were considered very risque at the time and I remember one being serialised in a newspaper that my father took at the time. I was told in no uncertain terms that I was not to look at it. But of course I did!!! The illustrations were very lurid, I remember.
I eventually read them in the late 60s and was extremely let down by the quite tame content.
Five Angelique films were made in the 60s starring French femme fatale Michele Mercier.
