There are always "bootleg" copies of a series appearing on the American market. When nothing else is available, then they're quite useful. But, since the Robin Hood series has been officially released in England, that's the one I would go after so long as buyers in North America have a region-free machine on which they can be played. And the only reason the name of Donald Pleasence is mentioned is because, unlike the other regular cast members, he is well known to American viewers. John

I live in the US and I wasn't familiar with him other than the few episodes from "The Adventures Series" that he appeared in. I knew more of Paul Eddington. I'm not sure why they would think promoting his name would gain interest. They don't need to do that, Richard Greene's name alone would be the attractiontion. I have asked numerous people, different generations if they remembered the TV series "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and everyone answered yes and they named Richard Greene as the star and recognized him as the favorite Robin Hood. Both the film and the cast were praised EXCEPT for Richard Greene who was not even mentioned. Most people in the U.S. who were born since the series originally aired have never heard of Greene. When it comes to American copies of the programme, my feeling is usually one of "Ugh!" Having grown up watching the series on ITV in London, I dislike the many changes made to American copies. Sometimes the intro. is different; other times, when the cast list is shown at the end of the programme, it is usually accompanied by an advertisement. I much prefer to see the series as it was originally aired and not an altered version geared for overseas audiences. John

She has just received them, and heres her mini-review: So far, the new DVDs have been terrific. The only downside is that they open with a movie screen curtain parting and revealing the opening shot of the program, but there is no fanfare introduction, twang of the bowstring, or thwack of the arrow hitting the tree; the sequence is completely silent. Everything else is present, including the full ballad behind the closing credits. The set comes in two packages, with 6 discs in the first, and 5 in the second. Each disc has two "volumes" of 7 and 6 episodes, respectively. The quality is superb and the cost is currently a special offer at USD$79.95, no sales tax, and free shipping. This set of DVDs is region-free, which I take to mean that they will play anywhere on any DVD player.

Posts: 149 (Wed, 4-Jul-07 21:31:34) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	While I was certainly disappointed to find the opening music and sound effects missing, the Vintage Theater collection is still worth it. I have the Alpha Video set, which has the opening audio, but there are only 60 episodes (on 15 discs, 4 episodes per disc) in that collection; they are not in sequence; and a number of episodes have closing credits from different episodes tacked on! I can revisit the opening on the Alphas any time I like, but I'll still stand by my Vintage Theater collection as complete, in sequence, and considerably easier to store. I would like better sound (the Mill Creek set is hard to hear unless I change a bunch of settings of my dvd player) and picture but I'm wary of the VT set since it seems that the opening doesn't have the music and effects.

It's true that you don't get the fanfare and sound effects in the title shot, but that's very short and available plenty of other places-even on YouTube. I have some Beverly Hillbillies DVDs and they have different music at the beginning and the end. The episodes are now in the public domain ie. free from copyright, but presumably the music is not. Each disc opens with the theater curtain opening and the bowshot sequence in silence. From there, one chooses a "volume" from the bottom right of the screen, which leads to a menu of episodes. Clicking on an episode title brings up the episode at its own opening, with the title card and sung couplet or instrumental opening (depending on the season).
