Posts: 127 (Sun, 4-May-03 06:12:05) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I wonder if anyone knows anything about a television show called "Holiday Hotel", which was broadcast on the BBC in 1955 from Blackpool. It was possibly a series. A Variety programme of some sort, that drew its acts from the resort's summer shows. I've done some research on 1955 in the Radio Times for London, but without any luck, so it may have been a regional programme that was only seen in the North. 1955 is too early for ITV in that part of the country. The ITV service didn't begin there until the summer of 1956.

Were there regional opt-outs in those days? In which case it could have been broadcast only in Lancashire - but I doubt it.

Yes, the one thing I'm sure of is that the show was broadcast from the Norbreck Hydro. Out of interest, would you know what the Hydro was? It's a memorable sounding name, and it's one I've come across before. I mean obviously it became a television studio in the '50s, but do you have any idea of the derivation of its name?

As Micheal S rightly pointed out you have to have access to water to be known as a Hydro, but it had much more than that, it had a fully equipted gym and personal masseur, an 18 hole golf course, and on clear days a panoramic view of Morecombe Bay and beyond. Posts: 7836 (Fri, 20-Jun-03 18:55:27) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Apparently Hydro is short for Hydropathic, meaning water cure,the affluent stayed at these places seeking relief from arthritis etc. In the 50s there were 4 hotels that spring to mind , Norbreck, Cleveleys, Imperial, & Queens, Hydro's.All on the Fylde coast.

In addition to its function as a hotel it must have been in some way, shape or form a TV studio during the '50s. If you think the Blackpool Gazette could throw some light on the Hydro in its TV days, or on the TV series "Holiday Hotel", I'd be very interested. I'm researching the local TV career of comedian Jimmy Clitheroe, who's said to have appeared in this series. But people may remember the series, or the Hydro in its TV incarnation, even though they don't remember that.

The reason that I am contacting you is that I've remembered a similar show to the one you described. It was put out on a Sunday night from the Hippodrome/A.B.C Theatre and was compered by Tony Hancock, I think he was replaced by Kenneth Williams, or was that another show? Meanwhile, I've found some details about the Tony Hancock show you mentioned. He was compere on one of the seasons of an ABC series called "The Blackpool Show", which they broadcast on ITV in the mid-60's. It was a variety show, from Blackpool, showcasing variety acts (mainly comedians and singers) who were appearing in summer season at the resort. Tony Hancock compered the summer 1966 series.

TH was often incapable, and on one show couldn't remember Vikki Carr's when he had to introduce her, so mumbled somethiing and stalked off. Poor ol' Vikki was unnerved and broke down in tears. (apologies if I'm wrong but I remember being appalled by TH's antics on live TV. Then again I have an audio tape of him an another of the series and he was OK)

Posts: 7836 (Sun, 5-Oct-03 14:09:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Thanks for jolting my memory re Holiday night, I think the programme was called Blackpool Night and was recorded from the Jubilee theatre, the theatre was unique in so much that it was situated on the top story of the old Co-oP Department store on Coronation St. sadly no longer there. It was compered by Jack Watson and I think produced by Barney Colehan. Quite a number of radio shows were recorded there. To my knowledge it did not house a Summer Season Show.

These programmes fell into two broad categories: light entertainment with elements of comedy, as exemplified by Showband Show directed by Cyril Stapleton and Holiday Hotel with Jewel and Warriss... From The Rise and Fall of the Reithian Sunday: 1936-1959 (my emphasis). Any help?

It had an intro " Make a date, don't be late for Holiday Town Parade "
