Posts: 10515 Wed, 17-Oct-07 01:18:44 Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None As I've mentioned before on W'Gig I kept diaries in the 1950's and re-reading them recently I am amazed at how many plays there were on TV in the 50's. I usually made a little note of the title and whether or not I enjoyed them. Were these live plays I wonder?

We've discussed that one on here a long time ago. Edited because I've found out when and who it was - "Underground" transmitted on 28/11/58 and the actor was Gareth Jones. Posts: 443 Wed, 17-Oct-07 20:46:42 Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As a fan of the Armchair Theatre series, I include the following ABC Armchair Theatre productions from the mid fifties going through to its final days under the Thames Television banner (Redffusion Television merged with ABC Television to form Thames Television, which took over London weekday broadcasts in July 1968 ). 'J' stands for live broadcast and any telerecording made likely to have been junked. By the way, Wendy, since all the ABC Armchair Theatre productions went out on Sundays according to my list, I checked up and 'Underground' was broadcast on Sunday 30th of November, 1958. I didn't have ITV until 1958 and of the list only three titles stand out to me. One "A Cask Of Amontillado" - known to me as an Edgar Allen Poe story and the other one is "A Magnum For Schneider". This latter play was notable as starring Edward Woodward and is the play on which a whole series followed - the well known and much missed "Callan" series. I loved it at the time. Also the 1959 production - "No Trams To Lime Street" by Alun Owen. I remember Alun Owen and Alan Plater seemed to be flavour of the month as writers for TV round about then. They both wrote so called "social realism" plays from the "kitchen sink" genre, I remember. Must declare a personal interest here, as Mrs Brown used to go out with Tom Bell who starred in this play with Billie Whitelaw just before it was made. I remember watching this play which is now apparently "lost". It was very wordy with very little action and involved two characters (Bell and Whitelaw) chatting at a bus stop? The only vague memory I have now is that it was pretty boring to me then and Billie Whitelaw wore a white trenchcoat, belted at the waist with a loose tie. (The sort that used to be worn by forties American detectives in B films). These were popular then. Strange the little details you remember. And funny how it's such a small world My daughter's friend married Billie Whitelaw's son and my daughter met her about three years ago.

Anyway I dont think you'll see it now as no copies exist that are known apparently. Just remembered another one from your list, Andrew. It's also incorrectly titled. It was by Colin Welland and was broadcast in 1970, when Welland was just making a name for himself as a playwright. And very good it was too. Your list has it as "Say Goodnight To Your Grandma". It's correct title was just "Say Goodnight To Grandma".

Here are some of his works for Armchair Theatre. 1960 Armchair Theatre: Where I Live [script] * Armchair Theatre: Some Talk of Alexander [script] * Armchair Theatre: Hold My Hand, Soldier [script] * Armchair Theatre: On the Spot [script] * Armchair Theatre: I'll Have You To Remember [script] * Armchair Theatre: Rain [script] * Kipps [script] * The play I am searching for was on many years ago (I would guess at early seventies but I may be wildly out there). It was a satirical swipe at large committees and the brouhaha which they can get involved in when disagreements occur. I know that doesn't sound like an inspiring plotline but it was brilliantly funny while making a serious point. The only thing I remember about it is the author. Haven't a clue of the title. It may even have been on BBC (possibly) but ITV more likely I think. Does anyone have any idea about this play or its title? I know it was definitely by Clive Exton.

"Mother Courage And Her Children" with Dame Flora Robson in the lead. Very worthy but unbelievably turgid for a young lad at the time. We did "The Government Inspector" as a school play one Christmas. Yawn and double yawn. If any one tells you the BBC hasn't dumbed down over the years - just point them in the direction of this series of plays. Culture was unbelievably "dry" in the fifties.

Drama was trying to push the barriers and explore human relationships. Of course it didn't flow, because the authorities would not let it. We are talking about the age of the Lady Chatterley trials. We are talking about the time when subjects we now have on early evening telly or even the news, were taboo. Ask any actor, trying to perform in a straightjacket will not result in a polished performance. Just a few brief years later the BBC was producing plays in the 60s that were tearing away the restraints of the censor. Surely you wouldn't say that the works of the Wednesday play, with people like Dennis Potter, were 'turgid'. If it had not been for the small advances made in plays of the 50s, such freedom would not have been possible.

I am merely saying that most of the above plays were turgid, meaning slow and laborious and a little too intellectual for the average man in the street. (At the time). There were undoubtedly some fine performances by the actors involved and nowhere have I raised any criticism of the acting. However, the sixties is an entirely different world concerning drama and also a subject in itself. I agree with you about authoritarian censorship restrictions inhibiting much work in the fifties, but I dont see any of the plays in the list above as pushing the envelope for freedom of expression, which seems to be the point you are making. Or is it? Potter, Pinter and Orton did much in the direction of breaking down barriers but this was a good few years later. Some of those plays listed above had been doing the rounds for decades and more in some cases. Fry and Eliot and Shaw were still being flogged around in the fifties but they wont see the light of day now in this commercially driven age. PS. The Lady Luvverley's Chatter trial was not actually in the fifties but at the end of 1960, and I agree, the floodgates were opened by the verdict. Hence the new liberalism of the sixties.

Posts: 443 Thu, 18-Oct-07 23:45:44 Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The 'strictness of morality in everything' in modern times can be traced back to Prince Albert who had parents that were not in a happy marriage. Nearly all Royal periods, and noticeably the Georgian period, had very lax standards (a fair portion of London was built on the proceeds from 'houses of ill repute'). Now, getting back to Prince Albert. The story goes that a baker's delivery boy was seen running around Buckingham Palace. Prince Albert joined in the chase and, while doing so, caught a guest in a bedroom with someone who was not his wife. That was unacceptable to Prince Albert who complained bitterly to his wife (Queen Victoria) who tended to take a more lenient view. He reminded her of the excesses of some of her predecessors and of her own desire for a more settled monarchy where good example was set by those at the top of society (with privilege goes duty). Hence, characters like Thomas Bowdler 'rooting out' profanity in literature and the censorship by the Lord Chamberlain of the theatre. Not for nothing was Queen Victoria called 'our middle class Queen' by much of the British ruling class. When Winston Churchill returned to power in 1951 he (as a good Victorian) thought that a 'moral tone needed to be restored and the answer was the setting-up of the 'Watch Committees'. The 'philosophy' was that human dignity was not best served portraying the worst aspects of human behaviour (and remember what happened to the Roman Empire!). I suppose the nineteen sixtiesists would have called the philosophy 'the Mary Whitehouse concept'. Well, there is the reason, like it or not. I can see some understanding of this when you look at the state of Georgian life as depicted by Hogarth ... even Casanova was revolted by what he saw of London's eighteenth century streets. Still, with the way matters are going, we will have forgotten 'Victorian values' in favour of eighteenth century values back on the streets of London, once more. Now, as for fifties British television drama being turgid, what about '1984', Saturday Night Theatre, Sunday Night Theatre, and the ground breaking Quatermass serials? All this and the superb Armchair Theatre productions of the mid to late nineteen-fifties. There was a series in 1958 called 'Television Playwriting' where writers new to television could have their works put into production and broadcast. It is true that the 'Television World Theatre' series did base itself on classic writers, e.g. Ben Jonson, Berthold Brecht and Nikolai Gogol (Tony Hancock played the title role of 'The Government Inspector') and why not? I was even more entertained by your Winston Churchill theory as well I remember those heady and shameful days of yore and those bawdy and licentious times when anything went and plays and films were a hotbed of unabashed debauchery. Oh, to have those red hot years between 1945 and 1951 back again. Now back to my original post. I never stated that ALL fifties plays were heavy - just the ones in that "World Series".

You seem to be complaining in one post that the BBC has 'dumbed down' its drama output, and in your next post that its 1950s' output was not 'dumb' enough.

Many of the plays I saw in England I watched again, much later, on American TV. The recordings were, however, "tidied up" so that mistakes seen on live TV in Britain were removed from the recording prior to its airing on U.S. TV. One example of this, which still sticks in my mind, was the play concerning Charles I. When it came to the execution scene, everyone in England saw the ax raised but, then, the camera operator suddenly focused on the actor playing the monarch and everyone in Britain saw him quickly moving his head out of the way before the ax came down. That small, but significant, mistake was removed from the recorded version shown in America. Today, I have no memory as to which American network showed Armchair Theatre but I'm jolly sure those tapes are lying in a vault somewhere collecting dust. John
