I also saw Bill Haley twice - First at the Dominion Theatre in 1957, and then at the Royal Albert Hall in 1968 with Duane Eddy also on the bill. These may
have been the same occasions as Viv.

I saw him around 57 at the Gaumont State in Kilburn great sound but as I recall he only did about thirty minutes, my favourites were the instrumentals
Rudy's Rock and Blue Comet Blues featuring Rudy Pompilli and Frannie Beecher.

Saw Bill Haley once only with his Comets at the Wembley Stadium 'London Rock 'n Roll Show' in August 1972 where,
in my opinion, he and his band stole the show. Viv was also there I have since learned. |

Clock autographed, and yes we do still have it

In my book, Bill Haley's finest recordings from 1955/'56 and quite outstanding.
Apart from the musicianship and the strong message for the listener to get up and dance, the main factor was the "good-to-be-alive" vibe that they gave off. Jiving to the incessant beat required a lot of energy, which was beneficial in that youthful excesses could easily be soaked up. Everything about 'See You Later, 'Alligator,' 'Rockin' Thru' the Rye,' Razzle Dazzle' etc. was positive, freewheeling and joyous. Oh, how we could do with some of that now. |

Wonderful to see Bill Haley applauded for his rock and roll music.
Sadly in today's press and magazines rock and roll only seems to go back to the Rolling Stones and their kind, a type of rock and roll I wouldn't spare 5 minutes for. At a push they will include Elvis but nobody tops Bill Haley. The first time of hearing was in the film 'The Blackboard Jungle'. Stunning. |
