Life with the Lyons questions |

In the process of listening to over 80 editions of Life with the Lyons which I got on MP3 from the States I realise now that for many years I've beenmistaken in the relationships of the family. In the mid 50s a charcter called Robin Lyon (a young lad) appeared and I felt sure that he had been adopted by Ben & Bebe. However when the cast were credited at the end of the show he was never mentioned. Now I find (indirectly) that it was in fact Richard Lyon who was adopted and that the character of Robin was played by someone named Richard Bellaers. Can anyone shed any further light on why this character came into being. Furthermore I've not been able to track down (as yet) any photos of the supporting cast (other than Aggie). So anyone provide pics of Doris Rogers (Florrie Wainright) Horace Percival (Mr Whimple - and of course assorted charcters in ITMA) and - oh yes - Richard Bellaers himself

Hi there Ossie whilst trying to help you out on your quest in the previous post I came across this don't know if it helps, meanwhile I will continue to seek out the pics you seek.
Col B "When Richard was called into the American Army to do his national service at 18, in 1955, they wrote in a second son to replace him while he was away. Robin was played by the youngster Richard Bellaers, but Richard Lyon failed the medical and was sent home. They had to write him back into the series, and until 1957 both "sons" appeared. Unfortunately the episodes in which Robin joined and left the cast have been lost so the explanations in the scripts are unknown. Bellaers left the series when his voice broke, later working for the airline BOAC. Guest stars such as Vic Oliver, Richard Murdoch, Robert Beatty, Dick Bentley and boxer Len Harvey appeared from time to time." also go to the link below for much more information. www.otterprojectonline.in..._Lyons.htm |

The 'Phil Watson' who has put so much effort into the link above in the Col's post is most likely our fellow Turnip 'Philwats' according to his hobbies in his profile. Hopefully he will read this thread and be able to assist.
(I feel sure you will have seen the Whirligig detail about this show Ossie which includes a photograph with the youngster). Jim |

I used to love Life With The Lyons and listened to it every week. This programme was responsible for a saying that has been used in my family ever since we first heard it said on this programme and I'm going to ramble a bit but just bear with me.
One week the Lyons were talking about boats and ships and of course the words 'her' and 'she' were being used in relation to what was being said. Richard didn't know this though so he was a bit puzzled and asked why. It was explained to him that boats were always 'her' and 'she'. He still didn't really understand why and nobody could tell him. You could almost feel the puzzlement coming over the radio waves. So the episode continued on it's merry way and towards the end of it Richard was asked a question about something. His reply? "Don't ask me I didn't even know about boats and ships". Ever since that day if any member of the family is flummoxed about something we've always said "I don't even know about ships". It seems stupid now writing it down but I guess you just had to be there. |

Oh goody, Wendy - you've just explained the "I don't even know about boats' catch phrase to me. I always remembered Barbara's "I'll die, I'll just die" but others that now come back on hearing all these happy homely shows (they'd never be considered nowadays alas) are Aggie starting and ending a statement with "If you don't mind me saying so", Bebe with her "Fed up. up up up!" , Ben's fixation with dolly mixtures and the sarcasm between him and Florrie. Also the Whimples 16 children (one of them with a deep gruff voice) What memories. And to have 84 shows on one MP3! Guess I'll never get fed up. up up up.
Thanks mucho for the Richard Bellaers explanation Colonel - and the picture. Now for Doris Rogers and Horace Percival please - or should I enter them in the Scavenger Hunt Game? Oz |

Yes I remember Barbara saying that too and what was so funny about what Richard said about the boat thing of course was that he was supposedly a teenage boy with raging hormones but had only just found out about the sexuality of boats. But of course I was much too young and innocent at the time to completely understand that. It's funny how things just stick in your mind though.

Amazing thing, the memory. As soon as I read your post Ossie, re "I'll die, I'll just die!" by Barbara, I can hear her actually saying it. But that bit of speech hasn't entered my head on one single occasion since the show finished. What was it - forty five years ago?
I used to love that show too. And didn't Aggie used to have a catchphrase she used to say every week as she made her entry which always used to get applause. Can't remember what though? Or am I imagining this? |

I can hear her saying it too and she did it in a very drama queenish way didn't she.

Re: RE: Life with the Lyons Questions | ||

No dramatic entrance speeches by Aggie in the 63 episodes so far. She usually enters asking if she should clear the breakfast things or bring in the dinner. Usually someone goes to help her in the kitchen. There's never any indication though as to where she actually lives - I assume she must have had a rtoom of her own somewhere in the house. At one time she seems to be enamoured with the next door neighbour called Mr Cobbledick - the man whose Tiger Mug filled with Elizabethan coins Ben managed to purloin in error when he was building an alcove.... etc etc. Buy the series (and tell him I reccomenmded you - maybe I'll get a discount then when I go for the Beyond Our Ken's. Shame there are no Educating Archie's or Rays a Laugh in bulk on sale)

Thanks to Jim for pointing me to this thread, I've been out all day babysitting and hadn't seen it. It's gratifying to read that my article is on the otterproject website for all to see. There are a couple of errors to correct and perhaps a comment or two that could have been deleted but as far I know it's as accurate as I could make it.
ORCA mentioned a couple of episode introductions that I'd reversed, but it's minor stuff. I also originated for many of the mp3 shows that are doing the rounds on sale, I made them a while ago to swap with fellow fans but of course somebody's sold them on. If you're looking for old time radio, you don't have to buy CDs from America. If you join Yahoo groups and search on old time radio there's at least one group that issues distros of shows on CD or DVD. Someone in the group prepares a series of shows on CD and offers it to the group. Members say they either want or don't want that particular CD. The administrator starts the distribution by making a list of members who want it, the CD is posted to the first. He copies it and sends the original disc to the second person, and so on, until it reaches the librarian. Old distro CDs can be obtained from him. It's all free other than costs of postage and blank CDs. My original mp3s were added to by others and a 2-CD distro of LWTL was circulated some time ago. A member is working on a Jimmy Clitheroe distribution at the moment, so far there's 130 episodes, but I may have a few more to add. The URL for the OTR groups is groups.yahoo.com/search?q...&sg=0&ss=1 There are lots of groups to choose from and all have similar aims, and I see the otter project is listed on page 1. The group I belong to is otrcdme-omega, and has two branches, Canada and UK. There may be other international branches. The main rule is - You must not sell the CDs. Anybody wants to discuss the group etc, pleae contact me at the address on the otterproject article, not this Whirlygig address which is obsolete and I can't see how to change it. Cheers Phil |

Managed to change my ezboard email address after all.
I have photos of Doris Rogers and Horace Percival somewhere, will try and post them. As you'd expect, Florrie is plump, blonde-ish and 50-ish, whereas Horace Percival looked nothing like I expected. Tall and thin, and bald, he was in his 60s when he joined LWTL and was around 75 when he died just after it finished in 1961. He was in ITMA and I wish I could remember the stories I read about him in somebody's autobiography. It was one of those "Oh, I must remember that" moments - but I've forgotten what it was. Cheers Phil |

I doubt that many of you will have ever seen a book on astrology which must have been written in the 60s which was privately published judging by the typeface and which contained a section written by Bebe Daniel.

How spooky Pat! Just recently listened to an episode in whcih Bebe reads all the horoscopes and tells ben not to go to manchester on business as it will. Of course he does - and it doesn't works out at first - but all ends well. Incidentally Charle Hawtrey appears in some of the episodes, always playing a very 'camp' character - this in the days when nobody else probably did. The last episode I listened to was all about Mother's Day and trying to conceal from Bebe her present (window boxes and flowers). of course Robin spends the money on something else, Richard gives the flowers toMr Whimple for his wife and Ben has to go to the flower shop called Blossoms (Charles Hawtry is Blossom)

Many thanks for that site Phil. I used to trawl Winamp and, more recently, Limewire for these old radio shows (Kraft Radio Music Hall and Orson Welles Mercury theatre, both USA for example, of which I have a nice little collection now)).
I will certainly be studying it in great detail. Jim |

This 'TV Mirror' from 1955 features a 2 page story on bringing the Lyons family to TV - and they are the cover stars of this issue too.
The first televised show went out on Wednesday June 29th 1955 and was titled ' Ben's Birthday'. This episode also starred Molly Weir, Charles Hawtry, Horace Percival, Doris Rogers andd Richard Bellaers. Produced by Bryan Sears.

51 this year eh Wendy ? A lady shouldn't give her age so freely !
A couple of lines, supposedly from the script include ... Aggie bakes a birthday cake and says 'but I couldn't put the right number of candles on it, or he wouldn't have the strength to blow them out'. Ben says ' After all, I don't have a birthday EVERY day!' ' I know Ben' agrees Florrie. ' You only look like as if you did'. Mark Excuse my kitchen floor framing the TV Mirror above! |
